Buyers Guide to A Futon Sofa Bed

Buyers Guide to A Futon Sofa Bed

Before we start discussing how to choose a futon sofa bed, we need to explain first what a convertible futon sofa bed is.

A convertible futon sofa bed is a versatile couch with an upright back which can be converted to a sleeper bed with a simple click mechanism. Futons come in a variety of sizes, shapes, colors, and upholstery. Futon beds are ideal for small room, studios and apartments as they offer two pieces of furniture in one; a couch and a bed to sleep on. They are a favorite among children, teens, college youth and even adults.

Before you embark on purchasing a new futon sofa we suggest you follow a few simple steps.

1)      Since futons fold flat it is important to measure the space it is going in. Since a typical futon extends by 10 to 15”, it is recommended that you allow 15 to 24” in the front of the futon for seamless functionality. A wall behind the futon or a coffee table in front of it might hinder the sleeping option functionally.

                       Typical futon size: (Up-right position) Futon Sofa 71"L x 34W" x 35"H

                                                                            Sofa Bed 71"L x 46-1/2"W x 20"H

The length of the futon remains constant, the width and the height vary with upright or flat configuration

2)      Have in mind about the potential use of the futon sofa. If the unit is to be used regularly as a sleeper, it is recommended that you select a heavy duty unit with a thick seating cushion.

3)      Selecting the frame. Futons are available in both metal and wood. If this piece of furniture is going in a living room or a spare room, consider the existing furniture and how much space will be available.

4)      Selecting the style. Futon sofa beds are available in a variety of styles that range from contemporary to mission. Some contemporary styles can feature a matching single chair that will extend into a sleeping bed.

5)      Upholstery. Futon sofas are available in: Fabric, soft flannelette fabric, corduroy, microfiber, leather and faux-leather.

6)      Selecting a color: Futons are available in white, black, brown, dark brown, gray, off-white, blue, green, red, checkered black/white and even zebra-print.

7)      Futon Backs. Backs come in two styles: a fixed-back unit that folds and unfolds as one unit. Split-back is where the back can split in two, enabling each back to fold or unfold separately.

8)      Storage: Some futons feature under bed storage that is accessed via lifting the futon seat.

9)      Arm-rests: Futons are available with both arm-rests or without them. Some arm-rest fold to extend the sleeping surface or be used as pillows. Others feature convenient cup-holders.

10)   Washable covers come in handy if the futon is used regularly. This will keep the futon fresh and looking like new for longer.

11)   Blue-tooth speakers: The newer contemporary style futons feature blue-tooth speakers that are perfect for entertaining guests or while doing chores around the home.
