Do You Need a Larger Dining Room Table?

Posted

Dining Room Furniture Size Considerations

When deciding what to put in your dining room, consider how you are going to be using it. Is it simply a space for eating? Will it also serve as an office? Once you have an idea of how you will use the space, you will then know what type of furniture to include. Obviously, a dining room needs a table and chairs, but what kind? Do you need a large table or will a bistro-style set do? Do you need storage, such as a china cabinet or sideboard?

Once you have answered these questions and measured your space to see what you can accommodate, you are ready to acquire your dining room furniture pieces.

How to Seat Your Guests Comfortably

No matter how often you use your dining room table, from once a year at holidays to every night, you want to sit comfortably.

Rectangular tables have long been the most popular shape for a dining room table. Typically, you will want to leave at least 36 inches between the table and wall to comfortably seat guests in chairs that can easily be pulled out. The size of your dining space will play a major role in the length of your dining room table. You want to allow at least 24 inches of elbow room for each guest to sit comfortably.

If you have a smaller space or want to create a more intimate feel, consider a round dining table. You will use the same measurements as a rectangular table: leave at least 36 inches between the table and wall and allow for 26 inches of elbow room for each diner. A round pedestal table usually offers more leg room as well, utilizing one pedestal leg rather than four on each corner.

Once you have chosen your table it is time to choose your chairs. Scale is very important. Some chairs are designed to be used at a dining table, while other are not. Ensure that the chairs you choose allows for between 10 to 12 inches between the seat and the top of the dining table.
